New Member ..looking for a place to live

Hey!

I'm moving to Toronto from Victoria, BC in mid August to attended George Brown's Theatre school and I"m on the search for a place to live.

I am a 20 year old with a love for theatre, community, eco friendly living, music and dance. I'm clean and respectful, and I'll be focused mostly on school while in Toronto.

I'm hoping to find a place for mid August/ September 1st in an eco contious, or community based house.
Downtown area would be great, as my school is in the Distillery District
And I'm hoping to find something in the $450 -600 month range.

It'd be great if you could tribe message me back if you know of anywhere or have any leads on where to look.

Thanks,
Hannah

Hi there,

I am visting Toronto on business and only here from May 5th to May 9th. I am having an absolute blast here and heading out to find an amazing sushi joint. Please send your recommendations if you have any? Are there any nice dancing and/or social weeklies in the Toronto area? Perhaps that feature psytrance or psyambient styled music? I'd be interested in reading about them if any of ya'll tribe members know of any.

Any thing else artsy, fun, and interesting to check out while I am here in Toronto. Looking forward to your responses.

Cheers,
I'm visiting! Toronto best alternative places, burners, etc.?

I'm planning to visit Toronto from Feb. 23-25, and would love to know a few things, if you don't mind helping me out.

We are all the burners? I visited burnon.ca, but there don't seem to be a lot of regular events. Maybe I'm missing something?

What is driving in Toronto like at this time of year? We're driving up from the U.S., and I'm worried about all the snow! Does it get really icy? Do you need tire chains or anything?

What is the best place to find second-hand clothing stores, funky shops, and events? I'm all for indie stores and markets, organic food, anything permaculture, and "underground" music/performance events of any kind. (Pub crawls are out, since I don't drink.)

Anybody know anything about the Canadiana and Global Village Hostels? I don't want bed bugs!

Thanks for your help - I appreciate it!

Hi!
I've been working in downtown Toronto for just under a year. While I am ever grateful to my employer for ordering in lunches every Friday, it seems to always be the same thing - Pizza.
PLEASE! I am on a quest to spice it up around here a little and am in need of your help :)

Does anyone know of any good *preferrably cheap* lunch catering choices in downtown Toronto?

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

I know, this is the Toronto tribe :)
I'm thinking about moving to Peterborough and I did an extensive research over the internet.
Generally, I found good reviews about the city, but I'm still interested about personal experiences.

So, is it really boring to live in Peterborough?
Or there is enough excitement to feel all right?

I'm not a party animal, but I like to check out a few gatherings over the year.
Hiking and outdoor walks are important for me.
I also like to chill ou with my acoustic guitar and engage in a deep conversation with the Machine Elves.

Any inputs appreciated.

Student Looking at Grad Schools in Toronto

I am an American Student currently looking around for grad schools. Two schools which are recommended to me over and over are the University of Toronto and York University. I am looking to enter a program on the history of gender and sexuality in the last 200 years. I am leaning more toward UofT right now as I have been told it is easier to get funding and a TAship, but I don't know that much about either. I have visited Toronto in the past and plan to again for a week in March (to tour the Universities) and love the city, but I am not sure what the city can offer a student as I've only ever been a visitor. Would I be able to find a part-time job off-campus? What is the cost of housing in the area? How are the winters? (I have lived in the state of Wisconsin for most of my life, but I spent a year living in Vancouver, BC in the past.)

Also, does anyone know how good UofT's programs in philosophy, comparative religions and/or history are? My boyfriend is also being told to look at UofT and those are his areas of concentration.

Mass Pan-Handle Tomorrow Morning (Toronto)

Mass Pan-Handle Tomorrow Morning (Toronto)

This is where I'll be tomorrow moring at 11:00am

The Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) is preparing to mobilize homeless people and their supporters to come down into the showpiece underground PATH system for a mass panhandle. We want to make clear why we are carrying out this action and what users of the PATH can expect from us.

Huge cuts to social programs and a desperate lack of affordable housing have fueled a crisis of homelessness in Toronto. Instead of meeting the needs of the homeless, those in power are looking to drive them out. Hostels have been closed and people forced onto the streets to beg. Then, police are used to harass and criminalize people trying to survive.

It is the developers, the major merchants and suchlike who press for a policy of sweeping homeless people under the rug. They don't want their money making to be interrupted by destitute people seeking the basic necessities of life. OCAP is organizing to stand up to this process of harassment. We are bringing homeless people and those who support them to panhandle in the very heart of the commercial showpiece they seek to drive people from.

No doubt, attempts will be made to portray our mass panhandle as something people should feel threatened by. We want to make clear that our anger at the injustices homeless people face is not directed against ordinary people eating or shopping in the Path. We will ask you for some change if you wish to give it and we will ask for your support and understanding of the situation facing the homeless.

Our mass panhandle is about people under attack demanding their rights. We hope you will agree with the stand we are taking and that we will have your support and solidarity when we visit the PATH.

Wednesday December 12 2007
11:00am
Meet in the Park just west of the King and Bay intersection
Breakfast will be served

** If you or your group want to participate in this action please contact OCAP at 416 925 6939

Hello,

I just moved to Toronto from Rochester, NY and was wondering if anyone in this area will be going to Playa del Fuego, aka PDF, in Odessa, Delaware next weekend, over the Thanksgiving weekend?? I'm in need of a way down there and was hoping to hitch a ride on the Friday night with a fellow regional burner.

Hope to hear from someone soon!

The BEST thing about living in Toronto...?

I'm an escapee from Los Angeles who is currently living it up in the (other) land down under: New Zealand!
I'm curious about Canada and contemplating a move there in summer 2008...
...would a twenty-something, recent college-graduate, aspiring writer/dancer/artist/activist/entrepreneur-type find peace and happiness (and a place to live and somewhere to work) in Toronto?

What's the BEST thing about the city?
Hi...

Well, I've just moved to Toronto and have already met a few wonderful people through Tribe.

I am thinking to pick up a regular spot on a Terrace at a nice Coffee place (or 2) and offer Henna to anyone that would like to connect
in a nice chill way.

No obligations but to bring your smile.

I like smiles so much that I nurture them in a special place :

http://tribes.tribe.net/sexiest-smile

So feel free to connect.

Blessings

Cris

PS : If you recommend a nice Coffee place with and outside deck, even better.

Hey all!
I'll be visiting the area soon and am looking for some cool places to get some clothes.

Can anyone recommend semi-upscale hip shops/boutiques that sell kind of alternative but classy clothes?
It'd be cool to find places that sell eco-friendly yet nice stuff too.

I'd like to find some unique things that I can't get just anywhere.

Thanks for any ideas!

Filip Mårdberg and Fredrik Gilenholt form one of the world’s most successful and electrifying live shows in the progressive/psychedelic trance scene. With a deep background in the techno scene they started playing around with their computer in 1995 and this step brought them along many paths they hadn’t dreamed of. Along the way their amateur dabblings became the acclaimed production standards we hear today, with an exquisite feeling for sounds and percussion.

Their unique style walks the thin line between trance and psytrance with crossover excursions on both sides. Their music varies from the floorfilling to the hipswinging funky but they all emit the Ticon sound and the message to be happy and to be loosin it to the music.

With acclaimed releases Rewind (2001), Aero (2003), Zero Six After (2005) and hit tracks like U Make Me Wanna Drink more, Ticon is preparing their 4th full album. Get prepared for the enthralling sounds of Ticon as they make their debut performance in Toronto!
Ray Vincent started out playing in bands and an interest in messing with gear and electronic equipment. Then he discovered the world of techno and fell in love with electronic music. It only made sense to start writing it. When Ray discovered psytrance he had found his home. Now after a few years of playing live shows he has honed his skills on getting the dance floor movin’ and groovin’. His music is best described as dark atmospheric psytrance that rolls along at a fast pace tempo. He has played at parties in Toronto and Montreal, including the Eclipse Festival in 2006. Get ready for Ekoplex to rock his hometown.

Stop Coastal Oil Development in BC!

Please sign the petition at bcoilslick.org

The threat of coastal oil and gas development looms over BC's wild and beautiful Pacific coast. For over thirty years there have been both provincial and federal moratoria in place to protect Canada's Pacific coast from oil and gas development. Currently, the BC government is intensively pressuring the federal government to lift their moratorium in order to open up the Pacific coast to oil and gas development by Chevron and Shell.
Coastal oil and gas development would seriously harm our marine ecosystems, fishing and seafood industry, and whale-watching industry through pollution and seismic testing (sonic blasts in the ocean that kill and harm marine life). At stake is the ecological integrity of our Pacific coast and the livelihoods of thousands of BC citizens that depend on these traditional coastal assets. We need your help to protect Canada's wild Pacific coast from inappropriate, dirty development.

More than seventy different interest groups ranging from tourism and fishermen to First Nations and environmental groups have joined together in the Oil Free Coast Alliance, and are on the provincial and federal governments to maintain the moratoria on any coastal oil and gas development off BC's coast. Here are some of the reasons:

75% of the respondents to the federal government's own public input process in the spring of 2004 supported keeping the moratorium in place.
The environmental and economic consequences of a major oil spill or blow-out in Canada's most earthquake prone region would be devastating to coastal communities, as was the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska. Earthquakes 8.1 (1949) and 7.0 (1970) on the Richter Scale have occurred in the Queen Charlotte Islands region. Also, the fiercest winds in Canada, recorded at almost 200 km/hr and the resulting giant waves there could demolish oil rigs and tankers.
Major oil spills aside, inherent in coastal oil and gas production is daily chronic pollution, including the discharge of toxic drilling fluids and muds, chronic oil leakages, and small oil spills that are unavoidable. Toxic drilling fluids and muds include mercury and heavy metals like chromium and lead that contaminate fish and invertebrates.
In order to locate oil and gas deposits, seismic tests must be done using air gun blasts that send shock waves through the ocean that deafen whales, kill fish and invertebrates, and drive fish and whales long distances away from their feeding areas and migration routes.
Coastal oil and gas development runs counter to Canada's Kyoto Protocol commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrocarbon extraction and production accounts for almost 20% of all greenhouse gas emissions in Canada.
Few direct jobs would be created for coastal communities. Foreign work crews with the necessary specialized skills would be brought in from around the world, as is normally the case. Oil rigs would be constructed where labour is cheapest and the facilities exist, likely in South Korea or China. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) forbids any laws that give first dibs on jobs to local people.
Federal Government Under Pressure to Lift Moratorium

The BC Liberal provincial government started the process to lift the moratoria when they were elected in 2001. Prior to the January 23, 2006 federal election, the Federal Minister of Natural Resources Gary Lunn stated his interest in allowing for oil exploration off BC's coast, which would require lifting the moratorium. It's important to let the new Conservative government know whether or not you want them to maintain the moratorium on coastal oil exploration, drilling, and transportation in BC right now!

It is vitally important that we flood the Prime Minister's office with letters of concern about offshore oil and gas development. Each letter counts for hundreds of people who feel the same way but didn't send in a letter. This is an issue that affects all Canadians.

Just thought I'd throw this out there in case anyone knows of anything sweet that'll be available in the fall. I'm starting at U of T in September and their res is really expensive... and doesn't look too private. I'm looking to spend between $300-$700, and I'd like to be close to UofT St. George campus.

Thanks!

Hi

I've been having a difficult time finding a flatmate for my College and Dufferin apartment. I've advertised on Craigslist, U of T, Georgetown and Seneca and I'm just not having any luck.

Its a gorgeous 3rd floor walk up with lots of windows and natural lighting (there are four skylights) The bedroom and bathroom are a decent size and there is a huge separate kitchen, separate dining room and separate living room.
The rent is 600 plus hydro every two months.

I'm looking for someone responsible, professional, liberal, clean and easy to get along with.

If you know of anyone or can tell me places to post please drop me a line here or send me an e-mail at mor_gon@hotmail.com

thank you!

1. Of, relating to, or suggestive of the preternatural or supernatural.
2. Of a strikingly odd or unusual character; strange.

blow (blō)
v. blew, blown, blow·ing, blows
1. To expel a current of air, as from the mouth or from a bellows.
2. slang. Sexual activity involving oral stimulation of one's partner's sex organs.

Weird Blows is an ongoing art project where people anonymously submit their bizarre sexual experiences. These will eventually be archived on an upcoming website for viewing purposes and certain experiences will be adapted into short videos that will also be placed on the website, recontextualizing these accounts through the lens of the pornography they can owe so much to.

You are invited to contribute your experiences to Weird Blows. Each experience can be fondly-remembered or otherwise and it can be based in reality or fantasy or somewhere in between. Possible themes for the experiences are not limited to accounts of oral sex or heteronormative relationships. There are also varying degrees of weirdness; one person's kink is another person's vanilla. What really matters is that the experience you submit is true.

We have only one suggestion:

Be descriptive! One or two-sentence experiences all tend to sound the same.

Mail your experiences to weirdblows@gmail.com or send them, postal-style, to:

The band has an east coast indie rock style and can be heard at www.myspace.com/dirtyholidaycanada
Thanks in advance to anyone who gots some information for me and to those who check out the band.

i just got a job in mississauga near cooksville (sortof in the dundas / hurontario are)

i don't know the city that well. i'm hoping to pick your brains

a couple things i need to figure out like what area to move to. i'm not a millionaire but not broke either, so an area where rent isn't too too costly. and it doesn't necessarily have to be right near where i work, so long as i can get there easily by transit. i'm looking for character. i like diversity. not a sea of highrises kinda thing. little shops, a grocery store, that kinda thing. i was considering port credit. but maybe i'd be happier in the city of toronto itself. not sure.
???

any suggestions of neighbourhoods that might work for me?

oh, that's another question i have, if i lived in toronto and took the ttc, would i have to pay another fare to get on the mississauga transit the rest of the way? like would i need two transit passes?

this is exciting.

NEW VENU - sub.conscious dec 8 w edIT, dept of motion, mutt, phat conductor + more

our new venue is the centre of gravity - 1300 gerrard st e. please tell everyone you know because we don't want anyone going on a wild goose chase. it's a much better space, and our old venue would not have been able to hold all the people that are coming. it's much better to have a big space with big sound, good ventilation, high ceilings, proper bathrooms, etc. we are very happy about it.

***for more info, ticket prices/locations, and audio samples check out www.downtempo.ca

friday december 8 downtempo.ca and the phat conductor unite to form sub.conscious and bring you a night of live music, cutting edge electronics, art + video installations, treats, giveaways, and epic debauchery! we'll be rocking til 6am so you better be ready to shake that shit.

edIT - planet mu, alphapup, glitch mob, L.A.

this guy is one of my favourite musicians period. his new album certified air raid material (dropping in march) is so goddamn ill that it made me come out of promoter retirement just to hear it again. if you're into bassnectar, tipper, prefuse 73, burning man, or anything like that you will LOVE edIT. we put a video and some audio samples up on downtempo.ca if you want to have a listen. his downtempo is among the most lavish ever, but you HAVE to hear the party jams. his beats are so dirty it makes me question my sexuality... he's pretty much the illest motherfucker ever.

just listen... www.complexplayersclub.com/edIT...x.mp3

'canada... prepare to be slayed'

the department of motion - girl delux, ilevel, mutt, the phat conductor

this is my band's first gig in toronto and it's going to be a blast. we've been hard at work over the last year working on an album that spans the genres of trip hop, drum and bass, house, downtempo, and breaks without losing focus or stylistic unity. it's pure creativity. brainfood for the lucid. we'll be doing a live audio video show for this event so be sure to come check it out.

audio sample: www.thephatconductor.com/DeptO...er.mp3

mutt - metalheadz, creative source, renegade recordings, misc.

in addition to doing beats and prodution for the department of motion mutt has a pretty impressive recording career behind him. in the last three years alone he has ha releases on metalheadz, creative source, renegade recordings and many other top drum and bass labels. his smooth groovy sound rocks dancefloors proper without descending into hours of mindless bass drops. i'm sure you will love it as much as i do. the guy is pure class.

www.myspace.com/muttdnb

the phat conductor - thephatconductor.com. sub.conscious

you know the score. i'm not about to write some cheesy third person bio. suffice to say its my party, i'm doing up the art and visuals, and i'll be rocking a full-on audiovisual set.

www.thephatconductor.com

rollin' cash - om, sumkidz, manervous beat

what is there that needs to be said about a cat who is THIS ill? the guy has been at it forever and it shows. his diverse styles are sure to rock any dancefloor and he is one chill dude to boot.

listen to a set here: www.djrollincash.com/mp3/real_estate.zip
www.djrollincash.com

sincere trade - math hooker

this guy has been quietly killing it for ages and ages. he plays mostly original material and it is quite scrumptious indeed. if you pay him nice, he might even help you with your calculus!

www.myspace.com/sinceretrade

adrian from downtempo.ca, sub.conscious

the man behind downtempo.ca has one of the most incredible music collections i have ever heard. it really is retarded. he'll be laying down an early set of downtempo and idm for all the true heads.

www.downtempo.ca

pr.incest - sub.conscious

this foxy bitch is one of the most avid music lovers i have ever met. her taste and dedication are truly humbling. she'll be kicking the event off with some taaasssty downtempo and experimental so be sure to get there early.

have a listen here: www.thephatconductor.com/princ...et.mp3
www.myspace.com/princesscoldheart

there's also another guest but it's a surpriiiiise Wink

anyway, enough out of me. just come. you won't regret it.

freeTOreuse a better choice than American freecycleto - freecycle Toronto

freeTOreuse is a Toronto Reusable Social Networking group of over 5500 members where each and every day people give of what they no longer use to those who have a need and reuse.

The owners of freeTOreuse both born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada do not charge for this service as well as they do not make any monetary gain or profit for the work that they do.

Unlike freecycle a nonprofit corporation in the state of Arizona - The Freecycle Network who run freecycle Toronto - freecycleto who's founder Deron Beal has received $130,000 American Dollars from WM Waste Management. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7955511/from/RL.1

Here is some more about freecycle for those who need to know and be forewarned http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freecycle_Network read it in its entirety.

Why would anyone want to support freecycle who are going to make money off of those items that you are going to give away for free? We sure don't know but maybe it is because those who join freecycle do not know what they are getting themselves into until it is too late. Well we think it is never too late!

At least ways for those of us Canadians in Toronto, Ontario who want to keep our cash north of the border! You have an option! Come join freeTOreuse today and bring more than just a smile but also bring those Canadian owned items and keep those belongings that you no longer want to use but want to reuse in Canada.

Join freeTOreuse today and bring a smile. :)

It's free stuff Toronto - Toronto free stuff

Evolution dictates change and reusable social networking is that change!

It is our hope that some day everyone in Ontario will "reuse locally and accept socially" that is our motto!

We've moved out of Toronto to save money while I'm on maternity leave, but we need to come back once a month for my baby's appointments at Sick Kids. She's crawling now, so she can't sleep safely in a bed with us when we stay at our friend's place. I've tried getting one second hand, but most places won't sell them second hand because of safety issues. Does anyone know of one that someone wouldn't mind giving away? (and yes, I've tried Freecycle).

Thanks so much!

Khat

p.s. there's another Cherry Beach party this Sunday! :-)

International Day of Action

International Day of Action
SATURDAY 12th AUGUST 2006
STOP ISRAEL’S BOMBING NOW

There will be an International Day of action on Saturday 12th August when demonstrations will be held around the world.

Mass rally & march in Toronto will start at 1.00 pm in front of the Israeli Consulate at 180 Bloor St. W., on the north side of Bloor, just west of Avenue Road. (Closest subway stop is Museum Station)

The US/UK proposal to send international forces to southern Lebanon, on their conditions, will only escalate this war. Deploying more firepower that is clearly 100% on the side of Israel will not stop this violence but will worsen the conflict. The immediate need is for Israel to stop its attacks.

For more information, visit: Toronto Coalition to Stop the War at www.nowar.ca

Made up of musician/producer and all around workhorse Brian Carson and prominent West Coast DJ /producer/David Hasslehoff look alike, Scott Arkwell AKA DJ Vinyl Ritchie. Lester's music has been described as "downright filthy, primetime block rockers" by Jockey Slut magazine. DJ Freddy Fresh says "[Lester] definitely have the funk" and included them on his 'Abstract Funk Theory' compilation for BMG Europe and his 7" 'Howlin' USA'. With countless exclusive white labels killing the clubs, two releases on Skeewiff's Jalapeno Records (London) and a second full-length album to be released in 2006, Lester are layin' down their musical manifesto.
Colin Chu, better known as Big League Chu, is simply the leading DJ talent in Canada?s breakbeat scene today. After nearly a decade of DJing, his name is synonymous with the funky, party-happy sound that?s become Chu's rallying call - and it's one that crowds answer faithfully. Passion for music and fun are what motivates Chu, who plays the piano, flute and guitar, and counts the Dave Matthews Band and Public Enemy as his biggest musical influences. It's this good-natured respect for good times and eclectic sounds that has garnered this humble DJ of Hong Kong and Singaporean descent to such a steady stream of press, from underground publications like Tribe and Klublife to mainstream outlets like the Toronto Star and Eye weekly.

A few of us wanted to get together and practice hooping.

Since there is already fire spinning on Monday, drum circles on Tuesday we're going to pick up Wednesday nights. The first gathering will be Wednesday June 7th after 7:30 at the park near Harbord and Grace, south side, close to the school

Hoopers, spinners and friendly laze-abouts welcome (heck I can bring my
Twister game out too!)

Cafe across the street, bathroom available at my place which is next to
the park. There is also kids equipment to play and swing on :) We'll have some not too loud tunes to play too, so bring cds/ipod if there is something that you love to dance to.

Looking forward to it!

*steph*

p.s. if it's raining, see you next week!

Stephen Harper Eats Babies

This is so funny :D If you don't feel like reading it, at least scroll down to the last paragraph ... hahaha!

Harper doesn't eat babies: GO Transit
Rail authority apologizes after mischievous rider hacks into
electronic message board
May 2, 2006. 07:47 AM
PHINJO GOMBU
STAFF REPORTER

Gerry Nicholls thought he was hallucinating as he kicked back in his
seat to take the 35-minute GO train ride to his Oakville home.

About every three seconds, the scrolling electronic sign that usually
carries transit updates and advertisements had a very different
message that he just could not keep his eyes off.

"Stephen Harper Eats Babies. Stephen Harper Eats Babies. Stephen
Harper Eats Babies," the message kept repeating.

"No one (in the car) seemed to be reacting to it," said Nicholls, who
happens to be vice-president of the National Citizens Coalition, the
same conservative think-tank formerly headed by Prime Minister Stephen
Harper.

"You go home and you are trying to rest from work and all of a sudden
where they usually talk about Ticketmaster, all of a sudden you see
this thing say `Stephen Harper Eats Babies,'" Nicholls said yesterday.
"I wasn't even sure when I got off the train. Was I hallucinating?"

Turns out he wasn't.

An ingenious hacker, who boarded the Lakeshore GO Transit westbound
train, made sure that on Thursday, Friday and yesterday, suburban
commuters in at least five different cars continued to get his or her
subliminal message

His weapon of choice was a remote control device that can be bought at
a Sam's Club and used to discreetly program scrolling electronic signs
found commonly in shop windows — and in every GO Transit train car —
from about two metres away.

When Exclusive Advertising, the company that sells interior
advertising on GO trains, installed the LED signs about nine years
ago, the signs, which have to be individually programmed, couldn't be
password protected, said company president Greg Donohue.

The company sells advertisers $8,690 of space a month to play
15-second messages with 52 characters on a three-minute loop.

Donohue said the hacker appears to have always gotten on the train at
the third car from the locomotive and used the upper levels of the
train.

"We have never had any problems until now," said Donahue.

GO Transit spokesperson Ed Shea called it "a case of electronic vandalism."

"Unfortunately it's a slur, it's an offensive message," said Shea. "We
regret it happened and we're sorry if anybody was offended, including
the Prime Minister."

To prevent it from happening again, GO Transit will have to power down
all the signs on their cars and use special software that is being
couriered from the United States to password protect 790 such digital
signs.

The whole process will take about three days.

Meanwhile, Nicholls said he's still not sure what to make of the whole
episode, except to say that he was more startled by the over-the-top
attack than anything.

"I kept waiting for the kicker," he said. "There's got to be something
to this. It's a joke, they're going to explain it. It's an ad for baby
food or something like that. It just kept going over and over again
and I realized that this is something that could be pretty serious.

"I'm sure a lot of people could take offence, and I guess the other
point is what other message could they put there?"

Asked about his time with Harper at the National Citizens Coalition,
Nicholls said: "I worked with Stephen Harper for five years and never
once did he in that time eat a baby."

Philosophy Cafe

I have arrived in Toronto from New Orleans where I facilitated Philo-cafes at local bookshops and coffeehouses. A philo-cafe is a free, open discussion of a philosophical topic in which there is no "right" answers and all opinions are welcome. The purpose of the cafe is to expand on the depth of thinking and definitions so that we all might leave it a little richer in our mental life. We usually do not come to total agreement but people leave with a sense of the complexit of the issure raised. No philosophical background is needed for this because we are all philosophers in our own lives. I will be holding a philo-cafe at Olivia's Restaurant at 53 Clinton St. near the intersection of College. If you have any questions, just respond to this posting. Hope to see you there.

Hi All,

My husband and I are planning on having dinner and we've narrowed down our choices to:

1) Canoe (loved Jump Cafe and Auberge du Pommier)
2) North 44
3) Bymark
4) Scaramouche
5) Joso's

If you only had to pick one of the five on a Saturday night which one would you go to? You see, I love Senses (Soho Met) and Pangaea and Hubby loves Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. What do you think? We're leaving it up to the tribe. Thanks!

All the Best,
Leticia

visiting Toronto : gay-friendly hotels

I'm visiting Toronto next week. My first trip to Canada!
(I'm actually thinking of moving there later)

I've been searching online for good (but not too expensive) hotels, hopefully near the gay part of town (Church st?).
(I currently live in the castro, San Francisco, the other big gay-friendly neighborhood)

Any suggestions, or prior experiences and reviews ?
Should I book online or get there and check things out (Its probably not too touristy there right now)?

Thanks,

regards,
rax

We'll get raucous, mellow, deep, intense, funny, and serene.

*note: it's going to be particularly fun this time because I have recently acquired one of these unbelievably cool musical-drum-type instruments, which looks like (quote from website) "a 1950's B-movie flying saucer."
