The BEST thing about living in Toronto...?

topic posted Fri, June 9, 2006 - 10:23 PM by  * A-Star *
I'm an escapee from Los Angeles who is currently living it up in the (other) land down under: New Zealand!
I'm curious about Canada and contemplating a move there in summer 2008...
...would a twenty-something, recent college-graduate, aspiring writer/dancer/artist/activist/entrepreneur-type find peace and happiness (and a place to live and somewhere to work) in Toronto?

What's the BEST thing about the city?

I'm not sure exactly how the term " Hogtown " began aside from the fact it had something to do with the fact that a long while back it was a cross roads for pig farmers in Ontario and big piggy process'n plants were located in Toronto !
Another nick name for Toronto is... " The Big Smoke ! "
This name comes from 2 different possible answers...1. up until the 60's Toronto was about the only place in Canada that had a smog problem! 2. In the winter because of all smoke stacks and chimney's billow'n you could hardly see the city's skyline !
Now I could be wrong in my definitions as I've not been around as long as the nicknames and maybe somebody else on this tribe knows the definitions better than I !
I have my own definitions for them that I know are not the real 1's...
        1. The Big Smoke....cause we have better weed laws than most places and one of Canada's best Weed Cafes is in Kensington Market in downtown Toronto !
        2. Hogtown...cause there are so many sweet Harley Davidson's rumble'n around place like Queen West !

Yeah, hogtown because back in the mid to late 1800s, many of the largely Irish immigrants used to keep pigs in their backyards.

the best part is you can taste all kind of food from different culture in this one city!
    it's great!
i m so food-oriented, so i love this the most here!
but sine you are from LA, probably you'll hate the winter here! (not this year, the winter certainly is very short this year)

that's it's one of the most multicultural cities in the world-

that underneath the somewhat waspish exteriors of staid quiet torontonians -
when you see them in their communites, neighbourhoods and tribes they open up and are pretty cool people

the dance tribes and mailing lists of OM/Orp, Harvest/Alien Influx, Promise, Fukhouse, Black Light Activists, Shakti

    fruit shopping in China Town

    kensington market

    ...

from a NZ'er who has escaped NZ to go to Art School here...
Cycling here is great (apart from the killer taxis..)
    Food is cheap,fresh and varied
Music ?, the choice is yours, recently plugged into a gig tomorrow night serving up downbeat electronica/dub ,nice !
Cheap to fly anywhere (apart from NZ..)
Good coffee to be had, the wines ok,the beer is excellent.
Art Scene is vibrant and diverse.
Once you get to know them, the locals are friendly and have been very generous to me

    Mike
